This is a great little tool in the market called FURminator, it cost's around $25 but it truly is worth the cost. This tool removes all the hair from the top coat and undercoat of either a cat or dog. Well worth the money if you dislike pet hairs everywhere.
If you own a long haired cat, you will no doubt have problems with matted tails or backs. The best tool I have found to remove these mats gently is the cat demating comb. These combs can be purchased at any pet store or Wallmart for under $10. When grooming your cat always do it gently to prevent scratching the delicate skin.
